A forge is a building used for blacksmithing work, as well as a facility for shoeing horses. It made tools and everyday utensils.
Was there a forge at the Old Market Square in Częstochowa?
Near the town hall, a cultural layer containing charcoal from burned and almost burnt wood fragments was discovered. Within it, numerous slags, sinters, and iron shales with charcoal remains were found that originated from smokestacks. These elements were found only within the mentioned layer, marking the boundaries of the alleged forge. The presence of lumps of non-ferrous metal alloys occurring together with iron shales may indicate that a melter was also functioning at this site.
